R.G.M. Dunovant papers, 1846-1907.

Papers consist of correspondence and military records. A copy of a letter (1846 Dec. 1) from P.M. Butler, militia commander, acknowledges the formation of a volunteer company in Chester, "the first to respond to the call for volunteers for the Mexican War," and conveys marching orders. Letter (1848 March 23) from [Major] A.H. Gladden in Mexico City to Major Dunovant of the Palmetto Regiment concerns Dunovant's participation in a review of troops, prospects of peace, Gladden's health, and other matters. Civil War correspondence includes a letter (1861 March 11) to General Dunovant from Governor F.W. Pickens concerning the formation of artillery companies; and a letter (1861 April 10) to General Dunovant at Sullivan's Island (S.C.) from General Beauregard in Charleston (S.C.) concerning the positioning of a Dahlgren gun on Sullivan's Island and other preparations for an imminent attack on Fort Sumter. Military records include paymaster's orders (1861); a requisition (1861 Feb. 19) for ammunition for the "Floating Battery" aimed at Fort Sumter; and orders (1861 March 5) from General S.R. Gist to Brigadier General Dunovant and his troops to report to General Beauregard for orders. On the verso of the orders is written a note (1907) by W.L. Dunovant (son of R.G.M. Dunovant) concerning his father's refusal to submit to orders from Beauregard. There is also a letter (1907) from "Pet" to "Vivian" discussing family matters and forwarding "a few things about Gen. Dunovant."
